Descendants of Benjamin4 GIFFORD

Generation One

1. Benjamin1 GIFFORD was born between 1705 and 1709 in Massachusetts. He married Mary LAWTON on 6 Dec 1731 in Portsmouth, Newport Co, RI, (intentions 29 Oct 1731, Benjamin of Plymouth, Mary of Portsmouth). He died after 1774 when in Fredericksburg Precinct, Dutchess (now Putnam) Co, NY.

Benjamin GIFFORD could have had 2 wives. Mary did not sign a 1740 deed and there is a possible gap in the middle of his children.

Benjamin GIFFORD may have had a daughter who married a PORTER. Jabez "Jabish" GIFFORD seems to have raised a Mary PORTER. The Jabez bible records show Mary PORTER born 16 Jun 1767 and died 29 May 1806.

The NEHGR article has a birth date of about 1705 for Benjamin. This may have come from subtracting 18 from an incorrectly transcribed date of 1723 on a deed.

Benjamin GIFFORD bought land in Plymouth, Plymouth Co, MA, from Gershom GIFFORD on 23 May 1733 (NOT 1723, both of Plymouth, Benjamin a labourer).1

On 21 Jan 1733/34, Thomas TUPPER Jr and Benjamin GIFFORD, both of Plymouth, husbandmen, partitioned land that they owned together from their fathers Thomas TUPPER and Gershom GIFFORD.

Benjamin GIFFORD sold land to Gershom GIFFORD on 25 Jun 1740 (land from 23 May 1733 deed, both of Wareham, no wife signed).

The Benjamin GIFFORD who married Mary LAWTON is probably the Benjamin who moved to Dutchess Co because his sister Elizabeth and her husband Jedidiah WING moved to Dutchess Co.

In 1743, Benjamin GIFFORD took a lease on lot 5 of the Beekman Patent in Dutchess Co NY.2

Benjamin GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Beekmans Precinct, Dutchess Co, NY, in between Feb 1743/44 and Feb 1757 (not taxed Feb 1742/43 or earlier).3

On 1 May 1748, Benjamin GIFFORD leased part of lot 8 of the Beekman Patent "on the lives of" Joseph, Benjamin, and Gideon GIFFORD. In a lease like this, at least one or two of the "lives" people were usually the lessee's children so that the lease could be renewed for a long time.

In 1757, Benjamin GIFFORD moved to Southern Precinct, Dutchess Co, NY. The Beekman rent records state that lot 8 of the Beekman Patent was "now Thomas Briggs by assignment 27 April 1757". The entry for 1 May 1759 showed "Thomas Briggs Std Gifford".2

Benjamin GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Southern Precinct, Dutchess Co, NY, in between Jun 1757 and Jun 1771 (next to Christopher DICKINSON, near Obadiah and Augustine BEARDSLEY).3

In 1769 and 1771 and 1772, Benjamin GIFFORD Sr and Benjamin GIFFORD Jr had accounts at Merritt's store in Quaker Hill, Dutchess Co, NY.4

Benjamin GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Fredericksburg Precinct, Dutchess Co, NY, in between Jun 1772 and Jun 1774 (not taxed Jun 1775 or later, same neighbors as when in Southern Precinct).3

Did Benjamin move up north like his children, or did he die in Dutchess Co?

No GIFFORD land records found in Bennington VT except for one of the Calebs from Cambridge.

A descendant of Amos DICKINSON, son of Samuel, reports that Amos told his daughter Lorena about his two brothers Thomas and Benjamin, and a half-sister Fanny. Also, he said that either he or Thomas [conflicting reports] were left with an uncle, Jabez GIFFORD, while Samuel evaded General BURGOYNE.5

Known children of Benjamin1 GIFFORD and Mary LAWTON were as follows:

Generation Two

2. Joseph2 GIFFORD (Benjamin1) was born circa 1733.6 He married (first) ? He married (second) Ruth. He died on 1 Jun 1805 in Ballston, Saratoga Co, NY.7 He was buried in Briggs (Wait) Cemetery, Ballston, Saratoga Co, NY, (in 72nd year).

Joseph GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Hoosick District, Albany Co, NY, in 1779 (not too far from Graham (Gershom) GIFFORD, Hoosick District included Walloomsac).

There was a Joseph GIFFORD in Beekman Precinct, Dutchess Co, NY, from 1781 to 1785, according to Frank DOHERTY. This was probably Joshua5 (Sarah4, Jeremiah3, Robert2, William1).2

Joseph GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Ballston, Saratoga Co, NY, in 1788.2

Joseph GIFFORD has not been found yet in the 1790 census (probably living with son-in-law).

On 2 May 1797, Joseph GIFFORD, Stephen WINSTON Jr and Anna WINSTON, all of Ballston, Saratoga Co, NY, sold land in Ballston to Ebenezer LORD.

Joseph GIFFORD appeared in the 1800 US census in Ballston, Saratoga Co, NY, (Joseph GIFFORD, 2 males 0-10, 1 male 45+, 1 female 0-10, 1 female 26-45).

There was an Andrew GIFFORD in the 1800 census index in Ballston. However, the actual census page says Galway.

Known children of Joseph2 GIFFORD and ? were:
Ruth was born circa 1739.6 She died in 1789 in Ballston, Saratoga Co, NY. She was buried in Briggs (Wait) Cemetery, Ballston, Saratoga Co, NY, (aged 50, wife of Joseph).

Known children of Joseph2 GIFFORD and Ruth were as follows:
3. Hannah2 GIFFORD (Benjamin1) was born say 1736. She married Jehiel BEARDSLEY, son of John BEARDSLEY and Keziah WHEELER. She probably died after the 1800 census in Peru, Clinton Co, NY.

Jehiel and Hannah (GIFFORD) BEARDSLEY supposedly had a daughter Sylvia baptized 10 Oct 1763 in Litchfield CT. But Jehiel was taxed in Dutchess Co NY from Feb 1758 through Jun 1773.8

Jehiel BEARDSLEY was born on 9 Jan 1733/34 in Stratford, Fairfield Co, CT.9 He died in Peru, Clinton Co, NY.

Cyrus and a daughter or two may have been by a first wife. The 1886 history of the old town of Stratford and the city of Bridgeport says that Jehiel BEARDSLEY had a wife named Martha, but that source also has him becoming a father at age 12.10

Jehiel BEARDSLEY appeared in tax lists for Southern Precinct, Dutchess Co, NY, in between Feb 1758 and Jun 1771 (brothers Obadiah and Augustine near Benjamin GIFFORD Sr).

Fredericksburg Precinct was formed in Mar 1772 from parts of Southern Precinct.

Jehiel BEARDSLEY appeared in tax lists for Fredericksburg Precinct, Dutchess Co, NY, in between Jun 1772 and Jun 1773 (same neighbors as in Southern Precinct).

On 2 Apr 1773, administration of the estate of John BURTCH of Pawling NY was given to his son John. Jehiel BEARDSLEY was also on the bond.2

On 16 Aug 1777, the Battle of Bennington took place in Walloomsac NY. According to Thomas DICKINSON's recollection in the Asa FITCH papers, Jehiel BEARDSLEY lived very near to the battle site.11

Jehiel BEARDSLEY appeared in tax lists for Schaghticoke District, Albany Co, NY, in 1779 (near Benjamin GIFFORD and Gabish GIFFORD, Schaghticoke District included Pittstown).

There was a Jehiel BAISLEY listed in the 1779 tax lists for Cambridge District, Albany Co, NY. Was this someone different or was Jehiel BEARDSLEY listed twice?

Jehiel BEARDSLEY sold land in Wells, Rutland Co, VT, to Cyrus BEARDSLEY on 17 Jun 1783 (both of Walloomsac, Albany Co, NY, Cyrus called "natural and first born son").

Jehiel BEARDSLEY was on an 2 Sep 1783 list of Freeman in Wells VT.

On 3 Mar 1785, Jehiel BEARDSLEY was chosen "selectman" and "leather sealer" in Wells VT.

On 7 Jan 1786, Jehiel BEARDSLEY had an ear mark recorded in Wells VT.

On 16 Feb 1787, Jehiel BEARDSLEY was chosen "selectman" and "leather sealer" and "tything man" and "petit jury man" of Wells VT.

Jehiel BEARDSLEY appeared in the 1790 US census in Middletown, Rutland Co, VT, (Jehiel BEARDLEY, 2 males 16+, 1 male 0-16, 4 females, next to Cyrus BEARDLEY, indexed as Ichiel).

By 1791, Jehiel BEARDSLEY was in Middletown, Rutland Co, VT.12

By 1799, Jehiel BEARDSLEY was in Peru, Clinton Co, NY. The "Genealogical History of the Beardsley-Lee family in America" says that he moved to Peru in 1791.12,13

Jehiel BEARDSLEY appeared in the 1800 US census in Peru, Clinton Co, NY, (Jehiel BARDSLEY, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 26-45, 1 male 45+, 1 female 45+, indexed as Jchiel).

Jehiel BEARDSLEY's son Jehiel had a son named Gifford BEARDSLEY born 10 Aug 1807.13

Some online sources have Jehiel BEARDSLEY dying in 1846 at age 112, but that would be extremely unlikely.

Known children of Hannah2 GIFFORD and Jehiel BEARDSLEY were as follows:
4. Benjamin2 GIFFORD (Benjamin1) was born between 1738 and 1742. He married ? He died in Jul 1825 in Pomfret, Chautauqua Co, NY.

Jabez may not be the son of Benjamin, but it is the logical place for him to fit.

Gideon may not be the son of Benjamin, but it is the logical place for him to fit.

Fredericksburg Precinct was formed in Mar 1772 from parts of Southern Precinct.

Benjamin GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Fredericksburg Precinct, Dutchess Co, NY, in Jun 1773 (not taxed Jun 1774 or later).

Benjamin and Jacob (Jabez?) GIFFORD were on a 20 Dec 1777 list of Rebel men taken prisoner by the Loyalists. The men were taken "at Bennington and at different places". Most of the men on the list were from the East Manor of Rensselaer and from the Hoosick River valley, including Pownal, in southwestern Vermont.15

Benjamin GIFFORD served in 14th Regiment of the Albany County Militia with Gershom and Gideon GIFFORD. Ensign Joseph GIFFORD also served. The 14th Regiment was from the Hoosick and Schaghticoke Districts.2

Benjamin GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Schaghticoke District, Albany Co, NY, in 1779 (next to Gabish GIFFORD, Schaghticoke District included Pittstown).

Benjamin GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Schaghticoke District, Albany Co, NY, in 1788 (Northeast Quarter, which would have included Pittstown).

Benjamin GIFFORD appeared in the 1790 US census in Pittstown, Albany Co, NY, (Benjn GIFFORD, 1 male 16+ (looks like 2 changed to 1), 4 males 0-16, 5 females, next to Jabez GIFFORD).

Benjamin GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, in 13 Dec 1799 (1101 acres).

Benjamin GIFFORD appeared in the 1800 US census in Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, (Benjamin GIFFORD, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 45+, 2 females 16-26, 1 female 26-45, 1 female 45+).

Benjamin GIFFORD appeared in the 1810 US census in Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, (Benjn. GIFFORD, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 45+, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 45+, near Benj. GIFFORD Junr).

Benjamin GIFFORD was probably living with his son Benjamin at the time of the 1820 census.

Known children of Benjamin2 GIFFORD and ? were as follows:
5. Gideon2 GIFFORD (Benjamin1) was born circa 1744 in Beekmans Precinct, Dutchess Co, NY.6 He married (first) Elizabeth. He married (second) Sarah. He died on 15 Apr 1822 in Cambridge, Washington Co, NY, (could be 13 Apr).7 He was buried in Methodist Stump Cemetery, Cambridge, Washington Co, NY, (in the 78th year of his age).16,17

This Gideon GIFFORD is often given a middle initial of G. This comes from the gravestone of his second wife which says “wife of Gideon G.” (not wife of Gideon G. GIFFORD). The initial on the gravestone probably stands for GIFFORD. No records for Gideon have been found with a middle initial.

Gideon GIFFORD's grandson, Phillip G. WHELDEN of Easton, married Jabez GIFFORD's granddaughter, Ann G. AUSTIN of Pittstown. This supports the placement of Gideon and Jabez as brothers.

Gideon GIFFORD was a signer of a petition in VT in Nov 1766 "To Obtain a Full Confirmation On The Lands They Were Granted In The Western Parts Of New Hampshire" (now Vermont). Many of the petitioners were from the Oblong area of Dutchess Co NY. Was this Gideon4 (Gideon3, William2, William1) or Gideon5 (Benjamin4, Gershom3, William2, William1)?.2

Gideon GIFFORD served in 14th Regiment of the Albany County Militia with Benjamin and Gershom GIFFORD. Ensign Joseph GIFFORD also served. The 14th Regiment was from the Hoosick and Schaghticoke Districts.2

Gideon GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Cambridge District, Albany Co, NY, in 1779.

Gideon GIFFORD appeared in the 1790 US census in Cambridge, Albany Co, NY, (Gideon GIFFORD, 2 males 16+, 3 males 0-16, 4 females).

Gideon GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Cambridge, Washington Co, NY, in 1799.

Gideon GIFFORD appeared in the 1800 US census in Cambridge, Washington Co, NY, (Gedion GIFFERD, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 26-45, 1 male 45+, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 26-45, 1 female 45+, next to Philips GIFFERD).

Gideon GIFFORD appeared in the 1810 US census in Cambridge, Washington Co, NY, (Gideon GIFFORD, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 45+, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 45+).

Gideon GIFFORD appeared in the 1820 US census in Cambridge, Washington Co, NY, (Gideon GIFFORD, 1 male 0-10, 1 male 18-26, 1 male 45+, 1 female 0-10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 45+).

Gideon GIFFORD of Cambridge, Washington Co, NY, left a will dated 29 Jul 1819 (the will mentioned wife Sarah; sons Eli, Joseph, Gideon, Philip, the last two deceased; daughter Deborah GIFFORD; daughter Ruth wife of Peter WHELDIN (WELDON); daughter Anna wife of Jonathan GREEN; executors sons Eli and Joseph and Francis McLEAN; witnesses Israel WILLIAMS, Joseph BOIS, Simeon CRANDALL). The will was proved on 12 Jun 1822 in Washington Co, NY.2

Elizabeth was born circa 1741.6 She died on 3 Jan 1806 in Cambridge, Washington Co, NY.7 She was buried in Methodist Stump Cemetery, Cambridge, Washington Co, NY, (in the 65th year of her age).16,17

Known children of Gideon2 GIFFORD and Elizabeth were as follows:
Sarah was born circa 1764.6 She died on 6 Oct 1838 in Hartford, Washington Co, NY.2 She was buried in South Hartford Cemetery, Hartford, Washington Co, NY, (age 74 years, wife of Gideon G., the G probably stands for GIFFORD and not a middle name).2

6. ?2 GIFFORD (Benjamin1) was born between 1746 and 1748 in Beekmans Precinct, Dutchess Co, NY. She married Samuel DICKINSON, son of Thomas DICKINSON and Mary CRANDALL, as his first wife between 1768 and 1769. She died in Spring 1778 in New York.18

Samuel DICKINSON was born on 26 Dec 1748 in Stonington, New London Co, CT.18 He married (second) Hannah CRANDALL, daughter of Samuel CRANDALL and Hannah CLARK, on 3 Nov 1778 in Charlestown, Washington Co, RI.18 He died on 22 Jan 1824 in Warrensburg, Warren Co, NY, at age 75.18

Samuel DICKINSON probably grew up in Beekman Precinct, Dutchess Co, NY. His likely father, Thomas, was taxed there from 1756 through 1767.3

Samuel DICKINSON moved circa 1769 to Center Falls, Washington Co, NY, ("from Rhode Island to this county some six years before the commencement of the revolutionary war").11

Samuel DICKINSON moved to Cambridge, Washington Co, NY.11

When Burgoyne's troops approached in 1777, Samuel DICKINSON fled to the home of his brother-in-law Jehiel BADGLEY (BEARDSLEY) on the north bank of the Walloomsac River a half mile below David MATTHEW's house. The David MATTHEW's house is on Route 67 in Sodom VT very near the state line.11

Samuel DICKINSON's pension records have statements by his son Thomas and his wife Hannah describing how Samuel (and maybe Jehiel BEARDSLEY) were captured the Hessians or Indians a day or two before the Battle of Bennington. They were taken to BURGOYNE's camp and later escaped.18

Before fleeing to Connecticut, Samuel and Hannah lived on a farm on the east bank of the Hudson River near Saratoga.

Samuel DICKINSON moved circa Nov 1779 to Stonington, New London Co, CT, ("his native town").18

Samuel DICKINSON moved circa Apr 1782 to Voluntown, New London, CT.18

Samuel DICKINSON moved back to New York after the Revolutionary War.

On 14 May 1795, Caty DICKENSON married Hazleton WELSH in the Old Reformed Dutch Church, Schuylerville, Saratoga Co, NY. This was the same church where Thomas DICKINSON married.19

Samuel DICKINSON appeared in the 1810 US census in Saratoga, Saratoga Co, NY, (Samuel DICKENSON, 1 male 45+, 1 female 45+).

Samuel DICKINSON appeared in the 1820 US census in Warrensburg, Warren Co, NY, (Samuel DICKENSON, 1 male 26-45, 1 male 45+, 1 female 45+, near Benoni DICKENSON 26-45).

Known children of ?2 GIFFORD and Samuel DICKINSON were as follows:
7. Jabez "Jabish"2 GIFFORD (Benjamin1) was born on 9 Sep 1750 in Beekmans Precinct, Dutchess Co, NY.20 He married Miriam CLOSE, daughter of Reuben CLOSE and Sarah HOAG (maybe HOAG).20 He died on 16 Apr 1816 in Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, at age 65.20

Gideon GIFFORD's grandson, Phillip G. WHELDEN of Easton, married Jabez GIFFORD's granddaughter, Ann G. AUSTIN of Pittstown. This supports the placement of Gideon and Jabez as brothers.

Some online sources have a daughter Olive GIFFORD born 2 Dec 1789. This is from a bible record, but that was Olive (TAFT) GIFFORD, second wife of Nathaniel GIFFORD.

Some online sources say that Jabez GIFFORD was born in Quaker Hill, Dutchess Co. If that is true, it supports the theory that Jabez was the son of Benjamin4 (Gershom3, William2, William1). Benjamin was living in that part of Dutchess Co until about 1757.

Nathaniel SYLVESTER's 1880 history of Rensselaer County says that Joseph GIFFORD of Pittstown, son of Gideon GIFFORD and Lois JACKSON "came probably 1782 or 1783. He seems to have been from a different family than the present GIFFORDs of the town." The "present" inhabitants of Pittstown would have been descendants of Jabez "Jabish" GIFFORD born 1750, which indicates that Jabez and Joseph were probably not brothers.21

A Washington County history says that Jabish and his wife Miriam moved to the Johnsonville part of Pittstown from "old Dutchess".22

Jabez "Jabish" GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Schaghticoke District, Albany Co, NY, in 1779 (Gabish GIFFORD, next to Benjamin GIFFORD, Schaghticoke District included Pittstown).

Jabez "Jabish" GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Schaghticoke District, Albany Co, NY, in 1788 (Northeast Quarter, which would have included Pittstown).

Jabez "Jabish" GIFFORD appeared in the 1790 US census in Pittstown, Albany Co, NY, (Jabez GIFFORD, 2 males 16+, 0 males 0-16 (looks like 1 chagned to 0), 5 females, next to Benjamin GIFFORD).

Jabez "Jabish" GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, in 13 Dec 1799 (Jabesh, 2120 acres).

Jabez "Jabish" GIFFORD appeared in the 1800 US census in Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, (Jaba- GIFFORD, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 45+, 2 females 0-10, 2 females 10-16, 1 female 26-45, 1 female 45+, indexed as Jabare).

The extra female in the 1790 census and the 26-45 year old female in the 1800 census was probably the Mary PORTER listed in the family bible. Mary was born 16 Jun 1767 and died 29 May 1806. She was likely raised by Jabez and Miriam.

Jabez "Jabish" GIFFORD appeared in the 1810 US census in Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, (Jabez GIFFORD, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 45+, 2 females 16-26, 2 females 26-45, 1 female 45+).

On 13 Apr 1811, Jabes/Jabish GIFFORD and Merriam/Miriam his wife of Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, sold land in Pittstown to Simeon BROWNELL of Pittstown, acknowledged same day, not recorded until 13 Jul 1824.

Family lore has it that Jabez GIFFORD is buried in what looks like a small cemetery behind the barn on the GIFFORD farm.

Jabez GIFFORD's land was divided 30 acres to his widow and 10 acres to each of his 6 children.23

Miriam CLOSE was born on 3 Feb 1750/51.20 She died on 18 Apr 1826 in Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, at age 75.20

Some sources have Miriam's maiden name as VASHTI. That is probably because the name Mary PORTER in the family bible looks like it could be Mary VASHTI.

Reuben CLOSE had a brother named Nathaniel who died young.

Some sources have Miriam CLOSE's mother as Phebe HOAG, but Phebe HOAG was her son Nathaniel's third wife. The death of Sarah CLOSE appears in the Jabez GIFFORD family bible, dying in 1824 in the 104th year of her age. Her age was likely exaggerated, but this was likely Miriam's mother. Sarah CLOSE, wife of Reuben, was a customer at the Merritt store in Dutchess County in 1769 (could be wife of Reuben Sr or Reuben Jr). Maybe Sarah's maiden name was HOAG.2

Miriam (CLOSE) GIFFORD appeared in the 1820 US census in Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, (Mary GIFFORD, 1 male 16-18, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 45+, 1 female 0-10, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 26-45, 2 females 45+, next door to Nathaniel GIFFORD).

Maybe the extra 5 people in 1820 were a nephew or niece of Miriam plus family.

Known children of Jabez "Jabish"2 GIFFORD and Miriam CLOSE were as follows:

Generation Three

8. Gershom3 GIFFORD (Joseph2, Benjamin1) was born say 1755 in Beekmans Precinct, Dutchess Co, NY. He married Thankful WIGHTMAN, daughter of Titus WIGHTMAN and Hannah YOUMANS, as her first husband.25 He died shortly before 15 May 1795 in Wells, Rutland Co, VT.25,26

The 1869 History of Wells VT lists Gershom GIFFORD's children as John, Samuel, David, Sally, and Polly who married Joseph Button Jr. Other records show that he also had a son Gershom.25

The periodical "Lewisiana" or "The Lewis Letter" says that Gershom GIFFORD [born 1785] was the son of Gershom GIFFORD and Thankful WEIGHTON of Hoosac NY.

Gershom GIFFORD's father's house stood on the ground where the Battle of Bennington was fought (actually Walloomsac NY).25

Gershom GIFFORD served in 14th Regiment of the Albany County Miltia with Benjamin and Gideon GIFFORD. Ensign Joseph GIFFORD also served. The 14th Regiment was from the Hoosick and Schaghticoke Districts. One muster roll shows him as Gershom Jr. However, another listing of the same muster roll does not have Jr.2

Gershom GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Hoosick District, Albany Co, NY, in 1779 (Graham GIFFORD, not too far from Joseph GIFFORD, Hoosick District included Walloomsac).

Gershom GIFFORD served in Captain Matthias BUTTON's Company in Colonel John ABBOTT's Regiment of foot soldiers of Vermont in August 1781.27

Gershom GIFFORD moved in 1786 to Wells, Rutland Co, VT, ("from Bennington VT", which is right across the border from Hoosick NY).25,26

Gershom GIFFORD appeared in the 1790 US census in Wells, Rutland Co, VT, (Gershom GIFFORD, 2 males 16+, 3 males 0-16, 3 females).

Gershom GIFFORD sold land in Wells, Rutland Co, VT, on 4 Dec 1794 (Gershom of Wells).

Gershom GIFFORD's death is not in the Wells vital records, but not many deaths were recorded.28

On 15 May 1795, Samuel LATHROP, Jason TYLER and David HOW were appointed by the Judge of Probate commissioners for the estate of Gershom GIFFORD, late of Wells, deceased, insolvent.29

On 13 May 1802, Gershom GIFFORD of Wells, minor heir of ? GIFFORD, chose Andrew CLARK as his guardian.29

On 6 Mar 1805, Samuel GIFFORD of Wells, minor heir of Gershom GIFFORD, chose Joseph BUTTON Esq. as his guardian.

Thankful WIGHTMAN was born on 19 Sep 1752.5 Thankful (WIGHTMAN) GIFFORD married (second) ? KENNEDY.25 She died in 1837 in Poultney, Rutland Co, VT.25

Known children of Gershom3 GIFFORD and Thankful WIGHTMAN were as follows:
9. Keziah3 GIFFORD (Joseph2, Benjamin1) was born circa 1763 in Southern Precinct, Dutchess (now Putnam) Co, NY.6 She married Stephen WINSTON as his first wife on 14 Jan 1789 in First Presbyterian Church, Ballston, Saratoga Co, NY.34 She died on 24 Nov 1795 in Ballston, Saratoga Co, NY.7 She was buried in Briggs (Wait) Cemetery, Ballston, Saratoga Co, NY, (age 32, wife of Stephen).35

Stephen WINSTON was born circa 7 Apr 1763.6 He married (second) Anna GIFFORD, daughter of Joseph GIFFORD and Ruth, in 1796. He died on 12 Apr 1799 in Ballston, Saratoga Co, NY.7 He was buried in Briggs (Wait) Cemetery, Ballston, Saratoga Co, NY, (age 36-0-5, buried near Joseph Gifford).35

Stephen WINSTON appeared in the 1790 US census in Ballston, Albany Co, NY, (Stephen WINSTON Jr, 3 males 16+, 1 male 0-16, 2 females).

Known children of Keziah3 GIFFORD and Stephen WINSTON were as follows:
10. Anna3 GIFFORD (Joseph2, Benjamin1) was born circa 1765 in Southern Precinct, Dutchess (now Putnam) Co, NY.6 She married Stephen WINSTON as his second wife in 1796. She died on 14 Mar 1805 in Ballston, Saratoga Co, NY.7 She was buried in Briggs (Wait) Cemetery, Ballston, Saratoga Co, NY, (age 40, widow of Stephen).35

Anna (GIFFORD) WINSTON of Ballston, Saratoga Co, NY, left a will dated 5 Mar 1805 (the will mentioned aged father Joseph GIFFORD, son Clement WINSTON, sister Keziah's children Joseph Sheldon WINSTON and Matilda WINSTON "by her and my late husband Stephen WINSTON", executors and guardians Elias HEDGES, Samuel DAVIS, Frederick WINSTON). The will was proved on 18 Mar 1805 in Saratoga Co, NY.2

Stephen WINSTON was born circa 7 Apr 1763.6 He married (first) Keziah GIFFORD, daughter of Joseph GIFFORD and Ruth, on 14 Jan 1789 in First Presbyterian Church, Ballston, Saratoga Co, NY.34 He died on 12 Apr 1799 in Ballston, Saratoga Co, NY.7 He was buried in Briggs (Wait) Cemetery, Ballston, Saratoga Co, NY, (age 36-0-5, buried near Joseph Gifford).35

Stephen WINSTON appeared in the 1790 US census in Ballston, Albany Co, NY, (Stephen WINSTON Jr, 3 males 16+, 1 male 0-16, 2 females).

Known children of Anna3 GIFFORD and Stephen WINSTON were:
11. Jabez3 GIFFORD (Benjamin2, Benjamin1) was born circa 1768 in Southern Precinct, Dutchess (now Putnam) Co, NY. He married Ama SISSON.36 He died in 1815.

Jabez may not be the son of Benjamin, but it is the logical place for him to fit.

Jabez GIFFORD appeared in the 1810 US census in Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, (Jabez GIFFORD Jr., 1 male 0-10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 26-45, 3 females 0-10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 26-45, closest to Benjamin GIFFORD and Benjamin GIFFORD Jr., but also close to other GIFFORDs).

The U.S. Army Register of Enlistments shows that Jabish Gifford enlisted in Major Thomas Biddle’s Co. of Artillery on 25 Mar 1814 for 5 ˝ years and was reported absent/dead at the cantonment near Buffalo on 28 Feb 1815.
