1. CHRISTOPHER1 GIFFORD was born in Jul 1658 in Sandwich, Plymouth Colony.1 He married Deborah PERRY, daughter of Edward PERRY and Mary FREEMAN. He died on 22 Nov 1748 in Little Compton, Newport Co, RI, at age 90.2

Christopher GIFFORD is number 6 in the NEHGR article on William GIFFORD of Sandwich MA. Click here to see the page(s) about Christopher GIFFORD

Christopher GIFFORD may have been named after Christopher HOLDER, the first Quaker missionary in Sandwich.

The birth of the first son Christopher was recorded between Audrie and Enos but with a birth date of 5 May 1687. That is too close to Meribah so the birth year should probably be 1691.

The births of Christopher GIFFORD's children were recorded in Sandwich, but land records suggest that they were born in Dartmouth.

It is not known whether William1 GIFFORD ever lived in Monmouth County, but his land there was divided in half for the intended use of his sons Annaniah and Christopher. Christopher's half of the land was sold by William back to John JENKINS on 14 Apr 1681. Christopher does not seem to have lived in New Jersey very long (if at all), even though his name continued to appear in the Monmouth County land records until he cleared up the matter in 1689.3,4,2

Christopher GIFFORD was probably still in Dartmouth in 1731 when his daughter Audrey was married.

Christopher GIFFORD of Little Compton, Bristol (now Newport) Co, MA (now RI), left a will dated 5 Oct 1746 (the will mentioned son Christopher, daughters Audrie, Mary BORDEN, Deborah WILCOX, heirs of daughter Meribah, grandsons Elijah and Canaan GIFFORD, granddaughters Rachel, Phillis, Dorcas GIFFORD, son Enos). The will was proved on 8 Dec 1748 in Bristol Co, MA.2

He died on 8 Jan 1815 in Gallatin, Columbia Co, NY.8 He was buried in Pine Plains Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co, NY, (in 61st yr).11,12

Daniel and Deborah were third cousins once removed.

Daniel and Meribah were third cousins once removed.

OneWorldTree has Daniel and Meribah marrying on 19 May 1787. That, however, was the death date for Deborah (WILBOR) GIFFORD according to the WILBOR genealogy.

Daniel GIFFORD appeared in the 1790 US census in Pawling, Dutchess Co, NY, (Daniel GIFFORD, 1 male 16+, 3 males 0-16, 4 females, same page as Joshua GIFFORD).

There should be 4 sons under 16 in the 1790 census. Maybe Valentine was raised by a relative since he was very young when his mother died.

Noah GIFFORD appeared in the 1790 US census in Little Compton, Newport Co, RI, (Noah GIFFORD, 2 males 16+, 1 male 0-16, 2 females).

On 14 Dec 1798, Noah GIFFORD and Martha his wife of Little Compton RI sold land in New Bedford with her HATHAWAY relatives.

Gideon GIFFORD is number 162 in the NEHGR article on William GIFFORD of Sandwich MA. Click here to see the page(s) about Gideon GIFFORD

Gideon GIFFORD served in the Revolutionary War, enlisting at Tiverton RI in 1777.

The NEHGR article has Gideon and Ruth marrying on 18 Jun 1780 but their intentions were filed in Freetown on 5 May 1781. Maybe they were married on 18 Jun 1781.

On 14 Jul 1786, Gideon GIFFORD and Ruth his wife of Little Compton quit-claimed his interest in the Bristol Co MA estate of his father Cainan GIFFORD deceased to Noah GIFFORD and Cainan GIFFORD both of Little Compton, recorded 3 Dec 1788. Gideon probably moved to the Cambridge/Pawlet area about this time.2

Gideon GIFFORD appeared in the 1790 US census in Cambridge, Albany Co, NY, (Gideon GIFFORD, 2 males 16+, 2 males under 16, 4 females).

The NEHGR article incorrectly has Gideon at Pawlet in the 1790 census.

Canaan GIFFORD is number 163 in the NEHGR article on William GIFFORD of Sandwich MA. Click here to see the page(s) about Canaan GIFFORD

"The Wilbores in America" lists Abigail GIFFORD born 16 Nov 1807 as the youngest daughter, probably because that birth is listed right after Canaan's children in the Vital Records of Rhode Island. However, Canaan's youngest daughter is called Nancy in his will. There was an Abigail GIFFORD born 16 Nov 1807 in Little Compton who was the daughter of Noah GIFFORD and Martha HATHAWAY. Also, Canaan GIFFORD moved to NY about 1805, so the birth of the youngest daughter would not be recorded in RI.

Canaan GIFFORD appeared in the 1800 US census in Little Compton, Newport Co, RI, (Canean GIFFORD, 2 males 0-10, 1 male 26-45, 1 female 0-10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 26-45, 1 female 45+, next to Ephraim GIFFORD and Noah GIFFORD).

On 17 Sep 1794, Noah GIFFORD and Canaan GIFFORD of Little Compton purchased 1/2 of a tract of land in Westport from the descendants of John COE late of Little Compton. Joseph MANCHESTER purchased the other 1/2. The Noah and Canaan sold their 1/2 to Joseph on 12 Jan 1795. The deeds were recorded on 13 Sep 1805, no doubt in preparation for Canaan's move to NY. Also recorded on that date was an agreement to partition land owned jointly by Noah and Canaan, which included part of the homestead of the their father Canaan GIFFORD.

Canaan GIFFORD sold land in Hamilton, Madison Co, NY, to Enos GIFFORD on 27 Nov 1805.

Canaan GIFFORD appeared in the 1810 US census in Madison, Madison Co, NY, (C. GIFFORD, 2 males 0-10, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 26-45, 1 female 0-10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 26-45).

The will was proved on 26 Dec 1827 in Madison Co, NY.

The will of Gilbert M. GIFFORD mentioned that his parents were buried in Waterville Cemetery.

Ancestry Public Trees and bernehistory.org have Thurston GIFFORD with a daughter Abigail born 26 Apr 1807 who married James BASSETT. According to the 1880 census her parents were born in NY. Abigail makes much more sense as the daughter of Johnson6 GIFFORD (Simeon5, Job4, Simeon3, Robert2, William1 of Sandwich MA), since she named a son Jeremiah Johnson BASSETT. She could, however, be a daughter of Johnson's brother William or brother Job.

An 1893 history of Otsego Co NY says that Thurston GIFFORD was born 2 Jan 1773. His age at death on his gravestone calculates to a birth date of 3 Jun 1773.

Thurston had owned the land for 30 years or more and the east half of the lot had been earlier conveyed by Isaac GIFFORD to Paul WHITE. Isaac GIFFORD is often placed as a son of Thurston because of this land record but he fits better as a son of Hicks. Thurston and Hicks were first-cousins-once-removed and came to Berne about the same time. They could have easily come together and purchased the west and east halves of lot 421 respectively.

Thurston GIFFORD appeared in the 1840 US census in Middleburgh, Schoharie Co, NY, (Thurston GIFFORD, 1 male 30-40, 1 male 60-70, 2 females 0-5, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 30-40, 1 female 60-70, indexed as GIFFARD).
