Descendants of Gideon4 GIFFORD

Generation One

1. Gideon1 GIFFORD was born on 28 Nov 1719 in Rochester, Plymouth Co, MA.1 He married (first) Lois JACKSON, daughter of Joseph JACKSON and Remembrance JACKSON, on 14 Mar 1742/43 in Plymouth, Plymouth Co, MA, (Gideon of Rochester, Lois of Plymouth, intentions 27 Feb 1742/43 in Plymouth).1 He married (second) ? He died after 1772 in New York.2

Gideon GIFFORD is number 46 in the NEHGR article on William GIFFORD of Sandwich MA. Click here to see the page(s) about Gideon GIFFORD

Gideon GIFFORD probably had a second wife who was the mother of his later children.

Edward MOSHER's wife Hannah may not be a daughter of Gideon GIFFORD. Edward did purchase land with Joseph and John GIFFORD and Gideon had a sister Hannah who settled in Beekman.

Barnaby B. MAXWELL's wife Patience may not be a daughter of Gideon GIFFORD. Barmaby did purchase land twice with Joseph and John GIFFORD and he witnessed the will of Ebenezer GIFFORD.

"Settlers of the Beekman Patent" has Caleb W. GIFFORD as a son of Gideon GIFFORD and Lois JACKSON. That Caleb, however, was Caleb5 (William4, Christopher3, Christopher2, William1).

Gideon GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Beekmans Precinct, Dutchess Co, NY, in between Feb 1757 and Jun 1761 (not taxed Jun 1756 or earlier, not taxed Feb 1762 or later, near his cousin William4 (Jabez3), one page away from Thomas DICKINSON).3

Gideon GIFFORD may have moved to Kingston, Ulster Co, about 1762. His son Joseph was married there in 1767. More research is needed in Ulster Co.

Gideon GIFFORD was a signer of a petition in VT in Nov 1766 "To Obtain a Full Confirmation On The Lands They Were Granted In The Western Parts Of New Hampshire" (now Vermont). Many of the petitioners were from the Oblong area of Dutchess Co NY. Was this Gideon4 (Gideon3, William2, William1) or Gideon5 (Benjamin4, Gershom3, William2, William1)?.2

In 1767 and 1769 and 1771 and 1772, Gideon GIFFORD and Joseph GIFFORD had accounts at Merritt's store in Quaker Hill, Dutchess Co, NY. They were not listed in the 1775 book and had probably moved north by then.2

Lois JACKSON was born on 14 Mar 1726/27 in Plymouth, Plymouth Co, MA.

Known children of Gideon1 GIFFORD and Lois JACKSON were as follows:

Generation Two

2. Joseph2 GIFFORD (Gideon1) was born on 17 Mar 1743/44 in Rochester, Plymouth Co, MA.1 He married Sarah FULLER, daughter of Daniel FULLER and Mehitable BROUGHTON, on 1 Jan 1767 in Kingston, Ulster Co, NY.5 He died on 7 Nov 1828 in Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, at age 84.6 He was buried in East Pittstown Methodist Cemetery, Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, (1829, in the 85 year of his age).7,8

Joseph GIFFORD is number 110 in the NEHGR article on William GIFFORD of Sandwich MA. Click here to see the page(s) about Joseph GIFFORD

The NEHGR articles says that Joseph GIFFORD was called Jr in his birth record to distinguish him from Joseph4 (Gershom3, William2, William1 of Sandwich MA). Examination of the actual record, however, shows that it was the father Gideon who was referred to as Jr.

The NEHGR article has the Gideon GIFFORD buried in the Lutheran Cemetery in Schaghticoke as the son of Joseph GIFFORD and Sarah FULLER. That Gideon, however, was Gideon G.6 (Caleb5, William4, Christopher3, Christopher2, William1 of Sandwich MA).

In the probate records for Joseph GIFFORD there is note that he signed on 1 Aug 1821 promising to pay Stephen GIFFORD $7.88 on 1 Feb 1822, "this being for value received". Some people construe this to mean that Joseph had a son Stephen. There are dozens of such notes in Joseph's probate records and there is no indication that Stephen was his son. Also, the names and birth dates of Joseph's children look like they came from a family bible and no Stephen is listed. Stephen was probably Joseph's nephew and he may have turned 18 on 1 Feb 1822.

Nathaniel SYLVESTER's 1880 history of Rensselaer County says that Joseph GIFFORD of Pittstown, son of Gideon GIFFORD and Lois JACKSON "came probably 1782 or 1783. He seems to have been from a different family than the present GIFFORDs of the town." The "present" inhabitants of Pittstown would have been descendants of Jabez "Jabish" GIFFORD born 1750, which indicates that Jabez and Joseph were probably not brothers.9

Some online sources have Joseph GIFFORD with a middle name of Addison. A middle name for someone born in 1743/44 would have been very unusual.

In 1767 and 1769 and 1771 and 1772, Gideon GIFFORD and Joseph GIFFORD had accounts at Merritt's store in Quaker Hill, Dutchess Co, NY. They were not listed in the 1775 book and had probably moved north by then.2

A Joseph GIFFORD served in Colonel William MALCOLM's Regiment of the New York State Levies. Is this the same Joseph? William MALCOLM was a wealthy merchant from New York City.

Joseph GIFFORD served in the Revolutionary War in the 14th Regiment of the Albany County Militia from 1776 to 1780. The 14th Regiment was from the Hoosick and Schaghticoke Districts. Timothy FULLER served in the same Regiment. So did Benjamin and Gershom and Gideon GIFFORD.

Joseph GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Schaghticoke District, Albany Co, NY, in 1779 (Schaghticoke District included Pittstown).

Joseph GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Schaghticoke District, Albany Co, NY, in 1788 (Northeast Quarter, which would have included Pittstown).

The towns of Pittstown and Schaghticoke were created on 7 Mar 1788 out of the old Schaghticoke District.

On 3 Aug 1789, Joseph GIFFORD, John GIFFORD, Barnabas Bryer MAXWELL of Pittstown, and Edward MOSHER, Luther SQUIRE of Hoosick, purchased land between Hoosick and Pittstown from Aaron BURR of New York City, Esq. On 26 Jul 1792, it looks like Joseph GIFFORD, John GIFFORD and Barnaby B. MAXWELL of Pittstown quit-claimed part of this land to Luther SQUIRE of Hoosack for two hundred pounds (not recorded until 21 May 1805). Joseph's part of this land was sold by his estate, except for 30 acres which he had sold to his son Joseph D. GIFFORD on 4 Mar 1816.

Joseph GIFFORD appeared in the 1790 US census in Pittstown, Albany Co, NY, (Joseph GIFFORD, 3 males 16+, 7 males 0-16, 2 females).

On 23 Feb 1790, William SHEPARD of Pittstown in Albany Co quit claimed land between the patents of Pittstown and Hoosick to Joseph GIFFORD and John GIFFORD and Barnaby B. MAXWELL and Luther SQUIRE.

Joseph GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, in 13 Dec 1799 (Captain Joseph, 2900 acres).

Joseph GIFFORD appeared in the 1800 US census in Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, (Joseph GIFFORD, 1 male 10-16, 2 males 16-26, 1 male 45+, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 45+).

Joseph GIFFORD bought land in Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, from John GIFFORD on 3 May 1809 (both from Pittstown, Rachel was not mentioned, recorded 3 Jun 1809).

Joseph GIFFORD appeared in the 1810 US census in Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, (Joseph GIFFORD, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 45+, 1 female 26-45, 1 female 45+).

Joseph GIFFORD appeared in the 1820 US census in Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, (Joseph GIFORD, 1 male 45+, 1 female 0-10, 1 female 10-16, 2 females 45+, near Gideon GIFORD, indexed as GIBERT).

On 11 Feb 1824, Joseph GIFFORD of Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, and Sarah his wife, sold land in Pittstown to Christopher ANDREW of Pittstown. On the same day they sold land in Pittstown to John WALLIS of Pittstown. The deeds were acknowledged by Joseph on the same day and recorded 16 Feb 1824. John GIFFORD had sold land to the same two men earlier.

On 6 Oct 1825, Joseph GIFFORD of Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, sold land in Pittstown to Lewis HITCHCOCK of Pittstown, witness Ananias GIFFORD, acknowledged by Joseph same day, recorded 23 Nov 1826. Sarah was not mentioned in the deed. She likely died between 11 Feb 1824 and 6 Oct 1825.

Administration of the estate of Joseph GIFFORD was granted to Gideon GIFFORD and Benjamin GIFFORD on 14 Nov 1828 in Rensselaer Co, NY, (Joseph and Gideon of Pittstown, Benjamin of Northampton).

Many sources have Joseph dying on 7 Nov 1829 (because of his gravestone) or 7 Apr 1827, but his probate records clearly started in Nov 1828. 1828 also works better with "in the 85 year of his life".

Sarah FULLER was born in Jan 1742/43.5 She died probably on 10 Jul 1824 in Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY.10,6 She was buried in East Pittstown Methodist Cemetery, Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, (age 82).7

The transcription of Sarah (FULLER) GIFFORD's gravestone has her dying on 10 Jul 1827. She was included in a deed when her husband sold land on 11 Feb 1824 but not when he sold land on 6 Oct 1825. She likely died between those two dates. Her gravestone on Find A Grave is very hard to read, and we know that her husband's gravestone (identical style and possibly made at the same time as hers) has an incorrect death year.

There are also conflicting sources for the age on Sarah (FULLER) GIFFORD's gravestone. The GenWeb "Interments in Rensselaer County Cemeteries" has 82y and the NEHGR article has "in her 85th yr." The NEHGR article also has Joseph dying in his eighty-fifth year, so maybe 82 is correct. A death of 10 Jul 1824 would make her "in the 82 year of her life" using the birth date of Jan 1742/43 that appears in Ancestry Public Trees.

Known children of Joseph2 GIFFORD and Sarah FULLER were as follows:
3. Mary2 GIFFORD (Gideon1) was born on 5 Jul 1745 in Dutchess Co, NY.2 She married Timothy FULLER, son of Daniel FULLER and Mehitable BROUGHTON. She died on 1 Jul 1830 in Penfield, Monroe Co, NY, at age 84.5 She was buried in Lovett's Corner Cemetery, East Penfield, Monroe Co, NY.5

Mary (GIFFORD) FULLER's birth was not recorded in the Rochester vital records. She was likely not born there.

Timothy FULLER died after 1809 in Northampton, Montgomery (now Fulton) Co, NY.

Timothy FULLER appeared in tax lists for Schaghticoke District, Albany Co, NY, in 1779 (Schaghticoke District included Pittstown).

Timothy FULLER appeared in the 1790 US census in Pittstown, Albany Co, NY, (Timothy FULLER, 2 males 16+, 3 males 0-16, 4 females, same page as Joseph GIFFORD and Jonathan FULLER).

Known children of Mary2 GIFFORD and Timothy FULLER were as follows:
4. Hannah2 GIFFORD (maybe GIFFORD) (Gideon1) was born say 1755. She married Edward MOSHER, son of George MOSHER and Hannah WING.

Edward MOSHER's wife Hannah may not be a daughter of Gideon GIFFORD. Edward did purchase land with Joseph and John GIFFORD and Gideon had a sister Hannah who settled in Beekman.

Edward MOSHER was born on 23 Jan 1751 in Dartmouth, Bristol Co, MA. He died between the 1810 census and the 1820 census in Stratford, Montgomery (now Fulton) Co, NY.

Hezekiah DICKINSON's wife Mary may not be a daughter of Edward MOSHER. She was born in Rensselaer County and Hezekiah lived in Hoosick. Their son Reuben DICKINSON married the widow of Edward MOSHER's grandson Edward W. MOSHER, even though the couple lived 60 miles apart.

Edward MOSHER did not appear in tax lists for Hoosick District, Albany Co, NY, in 1779.

Edward MOSHER appeared in the 1790 US census in Hoosick, Albany Co, NY, (Edward MOSHER, 1 male 16+, 1 male 0-16, 4 females).

Edward MOSHER has not been found yet in the 1800 census.

Edward MOSHER appeared in the 1810 US census in Stratford, Montgomery Co, NY, (Edward MASHER, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 45+, 1 female 45+, same page as George MOSER and Abiather MOSER).

Known children of Hannah2 GIFFORD (maybe GIFFORD) and Edward MOSHER were:
5. William2 GIFFORD (Gideon1) was born on 28 Jan 1758 in Beekmans Precinct, Dutchess Co, NY.5 He married Elizabeth JAMES between 1780 and 1781. He died on 15 Aug 1846 in Greenfield Tp, Erie Co, PA, at age 88. He was buried in Hoag Cemetery, Harborcreek Tp, Erie Co, PA.14

An Erie Co PA book about Revolutionary War soldiers says that William was the son of Captain Gideon GIFFORD of Pawlet VT. William was not the son of the Gideon GIFFORD who lived in Pawlet. The name Gideon is probably correct but the book has the wrong Gideon.

The names of William GIFFORD's children are listed in the book about Erie Co PA Revolutionary War soldiers.14

Many sources have Benjamin as William GIFFORD's oldest son. This is probably because Benjamin is listed first in the book about Revolutionary War soldiers from Erie Co and also because Benjamin of Ellery NY is mistakenly identified as a son of William. William was serving in the mililtary until Apr 1780. His oldest son was probably Joseph born about 1782. Benjamin of Ellery NY was born in MA between 1771 and 1777.14

DNA testing has proven that Jabez, James and John were sons of William GIFFORD (1758-1746).

In Feb 1776, William GIFFORD enlisted at Cambridge NY in Captain Benjamin HICKS Company in Colonel Goosen VAN SCHAICK's 1st Regiment of the New York Line. He was discharged on 1 Jan 1777 at Johnstown NY. Actual military records need to be checked, as DAR records supposedly say that William was living in Pittstown at the time of his enlistment and had moved there from RI.15

In Jan 1777, William GIFFORD enlisted in Captain Cornelius J. JANSEN's Company in Colonel Peter GANSEVOORT's 3rd Regiment of the New York Line. He was discharged on 1 Apr 1780 at Saratoga NY. However, "New York in the Revolution" says that he enlisted on 2 Dec 1776 and deserted on 9 Apr 1781.15

In a Revolutionary War pay voucher dated 28 Feb 1785, "To Col John Rensselar. Please to Deliver to the Barer William Stark the notes that is due to Christopher Starks for his militia wagers and you will oblige your friend, Susanna Stark. Witnesses William Gifford and John Gifford". William STARK was living in Pittstown in 1790 and married Mehitable FULLER, daughter of Mary GIFFORD and Timothy FULLER.

A William GIFFORD had a mark registered in the Pittstown town records. The date is unknown, but it was somewhere between 1783 and 1799.

William GIFFORD did not appear on the 16 Oct 1788 tax list for Schaghticoke District, which included Pittstown.

William GIFFORD appeared in the 1790 US census in Arlington, Bennington Co, VT, (Wm. GIFFORD, 1 male 16+, 5 males 0-16, 1 female).

William GIFFORD appeared in the 1800 US census in Arlington, Bennington Co, VT, (William GIFFORD, 3 males 0-10, 3 males 10-16, 2 males 16-26, 1 male 26-45, 1 female 0-10, 1 female 26-45).

No GIFFORD land records found in Arlington VT.

William GIFFORD appeared in the 1810 US census in Luzerne, Washington Co, NY, (William GIFFORD, 1 male 0-10, 2 males 10-16, 2 males 16-26, maybe 1 male 26-45, 1 male 45+, 1 female 0-10, 2 females 10-16, 3 females 16-26, 1 female 45+, same page as Joseph GIFFORD, near William PERRIGO and Nathan HAYS).

William GIFFORD appeared in the 1810 US census in Queensbury, Washington Co, NY, (William GIFFORD, 3 males 0-10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 45+, 1 female 0-10, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 45+, next to William PERRIGO).

It looks like William GIFFORD was listed twice in the 1810 census. Neither census entry makes complete sense. The Luzerne females ages 10-16 and 16-26 could have been mistakenly copied from the entry above William.

William GIFFORD supposedly had a son who died in the War of 1812. Was that Benjamin?

Warren Co was formed on 12 Mar 1813 from part of Washington Co.

William GIFFORD of Queensbury NY applied for a pension on 11 May 1818. He stated that he was 60 years old. The pension was granted 27 Jul 1818 (certificate number 12917).15

William GIFFORD appeared in the 1820 US census in Luzerne, Warren Co, NY, (William GIFFORD, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 45+, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 45+, same page as Joseph GIFFORD).

William GIFFORD applied for a transfer of his pension on 5 Sep 1833. He had "removed about 3 years ago" from NY to PA, where "most of his children as far as he knew" lived.15

William GIFFORD appeared with James Murray GIFFORD in the 1840 US census in Harborcreek Tp, Erie Co, PA, (James M. GIFFORD, 1 male 0-5, 2 males 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 40-50, 1 male 80-90, 1 female 0-5, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 30-40, William GIFFORD veteran age 86 blind).

An obituary for William GIFFORD appeared in the 12 Sep 1846 issue of the Erie Observer, Erie, Erie Co, PA. died at the home of his son James M. GIFFORD of Greenfield Township in the 89th year of his age.

In a probate document dated 13 Nov 1846, William GIFFORD's pension payments from 4 Mar 1846 to 15 Aug 1846 were mentioned. This gives us verification of his death date.

In the 1855 NY census at Horicon in Warren Co was Eliza MERIL age 43 born Warren 7 years in city, her husband Daniel MERIL, child Jane GIFFORD age 19 born Warren, Isaah [?] GIFFORD 22 Otsego 5/12 in city, and his MERIL children. Where does this family fit?

Elizabeth JAMES was born circa 1760 in maybe in Vermont.15,4 She died between the 1830 census and the 1840 census in Erie Co, PA.

Known children of William2 GIFFORD and Elizabeth JAMES were as follows:

Starting in Jul 1777, John GIFFORD served 1 month under Captain Elisha RUSSELL and Colonel KNICKERBOCKER out of Pittstown (where his brother was living). One of the Lieutenants in the Company was Joseph GIFFORD.17

In Sep 1779, John GIFFORD was living in the Hoosick district of Rensselaer Co when he became a substitute for a sick Job LUMIS. He served about 4 months under Captain Levi STOCKWELL.17

Starting in Sep 1780, John GIFFORD served under Captiain Adiel SHERWOOD and Colonel Morris GRAHAM (in the 3rd NY Regiment out of Dutchess Co?) and was taken prisoner on 10 Oct at Fort Ann. There is detailed information in his pension records about where he was kept as a prisoner. He was finally released in a prisoner exchange in Nov 1782 and returned to Cambridge, "it being his place of residence".17,18

The deed mentioned "as the magnetic needle pointed in the year A.D. 1789", so maybe this was part of the land John and others bought from Aaron BURR.

John GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, in 13 Dec 1799 (1100 acres + 1120 acres).

John GIFFORD appeared in the 1800 US census in Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, (John GIFFORD, 1 male 0-10, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 26-45, 2 females 0-10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 26-45).

There was a land transaction in the 1830s between John GIFFORD and William COLLINS.

On 19 Sep 1832, John GIFFORD of Mayfield, Montgomery Co NY, appeared in court to file a pension application. He was 72 years old and was called John Senior. Rachel was born in Connecticut. She died between 1820 and 1830 in Mayfield, Montgomery (now Fulton) Co, NY.4

Rachel's maiden name may have been ELLIS. There was a Lyman ELLIS (born 1759) living in Pittstown in 1790. Lyman had an uncle and a grandfather named Stephen ELLIS.

Known children of John2 GIFFORD and Rachel were as follows:
Elizabeth "Betsey" was born circa 1767 in New York.4 She died after the 1850 census in Northampton, Fulton Co, NY.

Generation Three

7. Gideon3 GIFFORD (Joseph2, Gideon1) was born (17 or 26) Sep 1767 in Kingston, Ulster Co, NY.5 He married Sybil WILSON.5 He died after the 1830 census in Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY.

There was a Hannah GIFFORD who married James H. AKIN and lived in Pittstown. Some sources have this Hannah as the daughter of Gideon and Sibyl, but she was the daughter of Elihu5 (Benjamin4, Jabez3, William2, William1 of Sandwich MA).

There may be a 5th daughter born between 1790 and 1800.

Gideon GIFFORD may have been listed with his parents in the 1790 census.

Gideon GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY, in 13 Dec 1799 (700 acres).

Enos Peck GIFFORD's gravestone says that he was born 18 Jan 1791. This agrees fairly well with the later census records, but the earlier census records for William GIFFORD seem to have Enos in the 1790 census and age 10-16 in the 1800 census. A birth year of 1790 also works better with the military records.

Enos P. GIFFORD enlisted in the 5th US Regiment on 28 Feb 1812 for 5 years. He was listed as deserted in Apr 1814 (indexed as Eves P. GIFFORD). This could be why he ended up in Canada.53
